WHAT ARE SMART HANDS SERVICES?

Smart hands is skilled, on-site technical work at a data centre, comms room, or remote site — carried out by engineers on behalf of someone who can't be there. It covers everything from racking and cabling new hardware to troubleshooting faults, swapping out failed equipment, and performing physical audits.

The "smart" part is what separates it from basic remote hands (power cycling, checking lights). Smart hands means the engineer on-site understands networking, can read a rack diagram, configure a console port, and make informed decisions if something doesn't go to plan.

WHEN DO YOU NEED SMART HANDS?

There are a few common scenarios where smart hands become essential:

  • You don't have local staff — your data centre is in Slough but your team is in Manchester. Someone needs to physically rack a switch, and shipping it to yourself isn't an option.
  • You're an MSP with a client site visit — your client needs a firewall swapped out but you don't have an available engineer that day. A trusted subcontractor handles the physical work.
  • Hardware failure at a co-lo — a drive has failed in your colo rack, the replacement has been delivered to reception, and it needs installing before end of business.
  • New site build-out — you've designed the network remotely but need someone competent to rack, cable, and power on everything to your specification.
  • Cabling audit or tidy-up — the comms room has deteriorated over the years and needs a professional assessment and remedial work.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL SMART HANDS VISIT INCLUDE?

This varies depending on the scope, but a typical engagement might include:

  • Rack and stack of servers, switches, firewalls, or patch panels
  • Structured cabling — Cat6/Cat6A copper or fibre patching
  • Hardware swap-outs — replacing failed units with pre-configured spares
  • Console access — connecting to equipment for remote engineers to configure
  • Labelling, cable management, and documentation
  • Photographic evidence of completed work
  • As-built documentation and handover notes

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A SMART HANDS PROVIDER

Not all smart hands providers are equal. Here's what matters:

  • Actual networking knowledge — can they read a network diagram, identify a fibre type, or console into a switch? Or are they just moving boxes?
  • Documentation — do they provide as-built records, photos, and cable schedules? If the next engineer can't tell what was done, the work is half-finished.
  • Reliability — do they turn up on time, with the right tools, ready to work? Data centre visits often have tight windows.
  • Communication — can they update you in real-time during the visit? If something doesn't match the plan, do they call you or just wing it?

HOW WE DO IT

At RUPE Networks, smart hands isn't a sideline — it's a core part of what we do. Our engineers hold FCSS, CCNP, and ACSE certifications, so when we're on-site we understand the context of the work, not just the physical task. We carry our own tools, provide full documentation on every job, and operate under your brand if you're an MSP sending us to a client site.

If you need reliable smart hands support — whether it's a one-off swap-out or an ongoing arrangement — see our smart hands services or get in touch directly.
